What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured mental health treatment option that offers intensive care during the day without requiring an overnight stay. It bridges the gap between traditional outpatient therapy and full inpatient care, giving people the support they need while still allowing them to return home each evening.

PHP is ideal for people who need more guidance and stability than weekly outpatient sessions provide, but who do not require 24‑hour supervision. This level of care helps people manage depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges in a safe, supportive environment.

Who Can Benefit from PHP:

  • Those who need more help than weekly outpatient therapy provides
  • People managing depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder
  • Individuals transitioning from inpatient care back to daily life
  • Those who need structured treatment but not 24‑hour supervision
  • People seeking intensive therapy while still living at home

Life After Mental Health PHP

Completing our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an important milestone, but it’s not the end of your recovery journey. At New Mind Wellness in Philadelphia, we believe lasting progress comes from continued care and support. That’s why we guide people into the next level of treatment that matches their needs, helping them stay connected to resources and community.

Continuing Care in IOP or Outpatient

After PHP, many people step down to our intensive outpatient program (IOP) or traditional outpatient therapy. These options provide structure and accountability while giving you more flexibility in your daily life. We also offer alumni support groups and ongoing access to therapeutic services, so you can continue practicing the skills you’ve learned and maintain the progress you’ve made.

Research shows that ongoing care after structured programs significantly reduces relapse risk and improves long‑term outcomes. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) emphasizes that recovery is a process, not a single event. Continuing treatment, whether through outpatient care, peer support, or therapy, helps people sustain improvements in mental health and substance use.

You’re Never Alone

At New Mind Wellness, our goal is to make sure you never feel alone after PHP. Whether you’re transitioning into IOP, joining alumni groups, or continuing therapy sessions, you’ll have a supportive team walking with you every step of the way.

Below is a list of options for continued care and ongoing support that can be offered once our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) concludes:

Regular sessions with a therapist, which may include individual, group, or family therapy to maintain progress and manage everyday stressors

Ongoing appointments with a psychiatrist to monitor and adjust medications as needed, ensuring that the therapeutic benefits continue without significant side effects.

Access to peer-led or therapist-led support groups where individuals can share experiences and strategies in a supportive environment.

Continued mental health support through online platforms, offering flexibility and accessibility for counseling and therapy sessions from home.

Programs specifically designed to recognize and manage triggers and symptoms that might lead to a relapse, helping to maintain stability.

Assistance from a case manager to help navigate life transitions, connect with community resources, and coordinate care among different service providers.

Guidance on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle choices that support mental health and overall well-being.

Ongoing support and education for family members to understand mental health conditions better and learn how to support their loved ones effectively.
